Pam Kilmer, one of our Five Star Realty Realtors, had an exciting Sunday night watching the Amazing Race on CBS. Her stepson, Josh Kilmer-Purcell, was in the season finale with his partner, Brent Ridge. Because the show was prerecorded, Kilmer-Purcell was not allowed to tell anyone the results of the race, while Ridge had to sign statements promising not to reveal the outcome of the show. Pam tried to get Josh to tell her if he had won, but she says, “He was wise to that.”

After a breathtaking finish, Josh and Brent were announced as the winners of The Amazing Race‘s one million dollar prize on December 9. Pam Kilmer gushed about her stepson’s win, saying, “He is an amazing person; we are so proud,” and compared him to his father Richard “Rick” Kilmer: “He gives so much to the community where he lives in Sharon Springs, NY, just as Rick did so much volunteering in Punta Gorda after Hurricane Charley with Team Punta Gorda.”

After the results were announced on national TV, Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge posted on their blog, Beekman 1802, thanking all those who had helped them in their journey on the Amazing Race, and shared their secret formula for winning the race:

1. Do the best you can at every task in front of you.

2. Help your neighbor whenever you can.

3. Don’t give up no matter how bad things look.

We have no idea if this is why we won. But we do know that this is how we raced.

The couple plans to spend their winnings on paying off the mortgage on their farm so that they can live together full time again after living apart for five years. They also plan on buying a downtown storefront in Sharon Springs, New York, in which to place their Beekman 1802 business. After that, they plan to create a line of food products nicknamed “The Mortgage Lifter” after a 1929 heirloom tomato, and donate 25% of the profits to other small American farmers who are struggling.

What an inspirational story! Comment below if you watched Josh and Brent on The Amazing Race.
